Welcome!

I am an art teacher and children’s book illustrator and writer.  I love what I do! Teach kids by day; create books for them at night.  It has been a journey of ups and downs but hard work and dedication has paid off with my first picture book coming out Fall 2018! To see what characters I’ve been working on, check out my Portfolio page. If you’d like to schedule a meeting or a school visit, pop over to my School Visits and Events page.

More About Me

I have been making things for as long as I can remember.  My mom said she could always tell where I’d been by the paper scraps I left behind.   I recall racing home from kindergarten to recreate an art project out of paper shapes only to find we didn’t have any construction paper.  I made my own by coloring entire sheets of white paper with a marker!

In 3rd or 4th grade, I drew portraits of family members.  I also started making crafts.  Since I didn’t have a craft book, I made up my own crafts and by 6th grade was selling them at craft fairs.  I still love crafts and several of my craft ideas have been published in Family Fun magazine and Highlights for children.

When it was time to go to college, I wanted to be an art teacher but my dad steered me away from it explaining that I could still be creative being an elementary teacher.  I earned my degree in Elementary Education with a minor in math.  I taught math to junior high students for several years but I still found a way to be creative having students use math to make quilts and build bridges.

After my kids were born, I became a stay-at-home mom and was reintroduced to the wonderful world of picture books.   The memories of my childhood books came flooding back and I started writing and illustrating stories.   It was this time that I started taking art classes to get a break from the daily routine.

I joined SCBWI (The Society of Children’s Book Illustrators and Writers) and continued to learn about writing and illustrating picture books.   When it was time for me to once again join the work force, my husband informed me I had enough credits to teach art!  My love of teaching AND art came full circle.

I have been teaching art to elementary students for several years and I love it.  I also continue to write and illustrate.  Hard work pays off and my first picture book comes out Fall of 2018!  It is called Crunchy, Not Sweet and stars a little tree frog dude hopping around experiencing new foods only to realize he likes food that is crunchy, but not sweet.   I can’t wait to read it to my students!

Other than art and picture books, I enjoy hanging out with my husband and three boys.  I also like reading, cooking, decorating, biking and adventures of all types!
